The suspect hijacked a policewoman on the N3 in Alberton.

It's reported the policewoman had been thrown out of the vehicle by the hijacker.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini says: "The hijacker was spotted in Alberton where a shootout ensued with police. He was shot and wounded. He lost control of the car and collided with a pole. He was arrested and taken to the hospital under police guard."

The ER24's Werner Vermaak confirms the suspect had been shot in the head.

"When paramedics arrived on the scene, they found the suspect still laying in the police vehicle. He sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics initiated advanced life support, before rushing him to a nearby hospital for further treatment."
