Police in Gauteng are searching for around 12 suspects who fled with an unknown amount of money during a cash-in-transit heist on the N4 east near the Watermeyer offramp outside Pretoria on Thursday evening.
The area was described as sounding like a warzone amid a gun battle between security guards and the gang of robbers.
Explosions could also be heard kilometres away.
Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says the cash truck was traveling from Modimolle in Limpopo to east of Pretoria
“The cash truck was reportedly driving from Modimolle to cash depot in Silverton when the incident occurred.”
“A shoot-out is said to have ensued between the suspects and guards, but no gunshot injuries were reported.”
Meanwhile Tshwane Emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso says three vehicles caught alight, leaving two security officers with burn wounds
“One patient was transported to Meulmed Hospital in moderate to serious condition and the other patient was airlifted to Milpark Hospital in a critical condition.”
