Police hunting for Benoni baby snatcher
Police in Benoni are searching for a suspect who kidnapped a baby at Lakeside Mall on Saturday.
The 11-day-old baby was snatched by the suspect after the mother had left the child in her care to buy snacks in the mall.
Benoni spokesperson Nomsa Sekele says the suspect also promised the mother employment.
“An 11-day-old baby girl was snatched from her mother by the lady that the mother met at Benoni Clinic when she took the baby for immunisation. It is alleged that the lady that snatched the baby, promised the mother that she is going to get a job for her.
“On Saturday morning, the mother received the call from the very same lady and she asked her to meet with her at Lakeside Mall. She met the suspect, they waited for the lady, who is a manager, and the suspect decided to give money to the mother that she can go to a shop and get something to eat while waiting,” Sekele explains.
The suspect then fled with the baby.
“The mother gave the child to the suspect and when she came back, the suspect was nowhere to be found with the baby, then reported the matter to Benoni Police Station,” Sekele adds
