Police label Senzo Meyiwa reports as ‘misleading’

National police have dismissed a report in the Sunday Independent claiming one of the seven people present during the murder of late Orlando Pirates goalkeeper and Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa is responsible for his killing.

The newspaper claims the alleged robbery was in fact a cover-up which involved senior police officers.

Meyiwa was shot and killed at Kelly Khumalo's mother's house in Vosloorus in 2014.

Police are still looking for Meyiwa's killer.

National police spokesperson Vish Naidoo has dismissed the reports.

“It is nothing short of story-telling based primarily on assumptions which can only be interpreted as intended to mislead the nation.

"The article contains a myriad of assumptions, untruths and innuendos which have the potential of causing unnecessary uncertainties," he said.

It has also dismissed reports that former lead investigator, Colonel Bongani Gininda, withheld crucial information around the murder.

The article claimed Gininda was transferred to KwaZulu-Natal before being questioned or arrested.

"For starters, Colonel Gininda is heading a team which is re-looking at cold cases in terms the South African Police Service Cold Case Intervention Programme as pronounced by the National Commissioner of Police,” says Naidoo.

"Gininda is still the lead investigator of the team which is investigating the murder of Senzo Meyiwa. He has never been removed or replaced as the investigator of the Senzo Meyiwa matter since he was tasked with this investigation in 2018.”
