Police mum on motive for AKA killings after six arrested

While police say they have their suspicions, they're unable to determine the motive behind the murders of rapper Kiernan "AKA" Forbes and Tebello Motsoane.

KZN police chief Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi held a late-night briefing with the police's top brass in Durban to update the media of the latest developments in the case.

"We suspect, but we are not going to talk about it. We suspect what could be the motive, but until there is a confession or whatever comes out, then we can know,” Mkhwanazi said.

They've nabbed six suspects linked to the murders of Forbes and his friend on Durban's Florida Road last year.

Mkhwanazi says there's no doubt the rapper was the target of the hit.

"He was the one that was followed from the airport to the airport. He was the one that was spotted inside the restaurant. And the plan was not to shoot him in the manner they did. They were going to shoot him in the vehicle. But because he stood longer outside greeting his friends, those hitmen didn't want to wait.

"That's why they came for him. So, the second victim was a coincidence that he was shot. I'm sure you realised the second shooter was quite a distance from him when he got shot," he said.

Mkhwanazi says they have not ruled out the prospects of more arrests.

"Of the six, we have someone who coordinated the whole operation and that's a person who has all these resources and people and that's the person who paid them after the job. So if he got an instruction from elsewhere, we cannot say that because we don't have that evidence.

“At least we know that he's the one that organised everything, whether he organised under the instruction of someone else, it remains to be seen through their investigation."

Cele confirmed that the suspects were paid to kill Forbes and Motsoane.

"They got money, they all got paid. The life of a person cannot be enough, but you would think such a high profile person that money would be real."
