Police officer among five arrested for OR Tambo heist

Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the heist at the OR Tambo International Airport.

The suspects appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court today.
A total of 27 parcels of foreign currency had been stolen after a group of armed suspects travelling in a bogus police vehicle gained access to a restricted section of the airport.
Police spokesperson Sally de Beer says: "We note regrettably that a police officer was among the five arrested at the weekend. We wish to reiterate that there is no place for corrupt or criminal elements in our organisation and this arrest sends a strong message that we will continue to investigate without fear or favour."
The parcels of foreign currency was destined for an SAA flight.
A photo of two men in front of a Lamborghini has gone viral - with reports suggesting one of the men is among the suspects arrested.
However, police have been unable to confirm this.
"The South African Police Service is disappointed that information and photographs apparently peddled to the media over the weekend were published today.
"We ask that our investigators be allowed to continue with investigations and that credible information be sourced from court proceedings," de Beer says.
She refused to confirm whether a Lamborghini was among items seized during the arrests, saying: "Items of evidence seized by the police during the course of the investigation will be presented in court during the trial of the accused."
The five suspects appeared in court on a charge of armed robbery.
The case has been postponed to 28 March for a formal bail application.
