The police ministry's Vuyo Mhaga says the incident occurred when the officer went to the cell to take medication and clothes to one of the female suspects.

"Lieutenant Colonel Vilakazi walked into the cell to wake the prisoner, but she did not respond.

"The suspect then jumped onto the police officer, grabbed her by her hair and banged her head against the wall several times."

Mhaga says the police officer collapsed while attempting to flee.

"Police members managed to call an ambulance but the officer was dead at the scene," says Mhaga.

The suspect has previously been charged for assaulting a police officer. She has also been charged with malicious damage to property.

Police have added an additional charge of murder against the suspect.
