Police spokesman's judgment postponed

The judgment of KwaZulu-Natal's former police spokesman Vincent Mdunge, who is accused of presenting a forged matric certificate when he joined the police, has been postponed until 15 October.

The case appeared in the Durban Regional Court today, but could not be heard because Magistrate Thandeka Fikeni was not available.

Mdunge's advocate Saleem Khan said they only received the news when they arrived at court in the morning.

Mdunge, who faces three counts of fraud and one of uttering, seemed unperturbed about having to wait another two weeks to hear his fate.

He is accused of fraudulently presenting a forged matric certificate when he joined the police in 1987. He allegedly used the certificate to enrol at the University of SA for a national diploma in police administration course, which he passed.

After the allegations surfaced last year, Mdunge resigned in September and was arrested in October.

Prosecutor Barend Groen argued during the trial earlier this year that Mdunge failed matric in 1985 and wrote supplementary exams in 1986, which he also failed.

He alleged the matric certificate Mdunge used was a forgery and had been tampered with, and that the examination number on the certificate was in fact Mdunge's Standard eight examination number.

Mdunge's former English teacher Vusimuzi Donald Duke Khumalo told the court in May that he personally handed Mdunge a matric certificate when he matriculated from Ukusa High School in Hammarsdale.
