Police warn Limpopo residents to avoid hitchhiking
Updated | By Nokukhanya Mntambo
Police in Limpopo have warned residents against hitchhiking following a spike in incidents where hitchhikers have been robbed in Tzaneen and Westenburg.
It is alleged that criminal syndicates rob hikers of their belongings.
"While on the way, the suspects demanded money from the victim and threatened to kill him if he fails to provide his bank cards pin codes. Within a short space of time, these cards were used at various retail stores around Polokwane," says police spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe.
Ngoepe has urged community members to stay vigilant and avoid hitchhiking.
"Members of the community are urged not to ask transportation from strangers when undertaking any trip because that may endanger their lives and lead to these type of robberies," says Ngoepe.
