Political party funding Bill gets the nod

The Bill will now go to the National Council of Provinces for consideration.

The Bill proposes regulating and making transparent private donations to political parties represented in Parliament and the Provincial Legislatures.

Parliament Spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo, says it is a crucial Bill for the progress of the country's democratic constitution.

"It will promote the constitutional principle of openness, transparency and fairness in so far as party financing is concerned," says Mothapo.

In June 2017, the National Assembly resolved to establish a multi-party ad hoc committee to inquire into and make recommendations on the matter.
