The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has placed CEO Zolani Matthews on precautionary suspension.
The rail agency says it is investigating allegations of a security breach and other matters related to Matthew’s contract.
The struggling entity appointed Matthews as CEO eight months ago.
Spokesperson Andiswa Makanda says the decision was taken by the board on Thursday.
“The board considered an alleged sensitive matter of security breach and other contractual obligations associated with the employment contract of the Group CEO, Zolani Kgosietsile Matthews.
“By consensus, the board resolved that Zolani Kgosietsile Matthews should be placed on precautionary suspension to allow detailed probing of the matter at hand to be concluded in his absence.”
Makanda says the board wants a speedy investigation.
“The board will endeavour to conclude the matter at hand expeditiously in the best interest of all parties involved. The appointment of an acting Group CEO will be communicated and the board will make sure that the daily operations of the organisation are not negatively affected.”
