Presidency no-show at Scopa, says SIU best-placed to speak
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The Presidency was a no-show at the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) on Tuesday.
Scopa chairperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa says Acting Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni told him the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is best-placed to answer on investigations.
“In their view the SIU is best-placed to brief the committee on these matters and therefore they are merely recipients of the reports.
“Quite frankly. it’s regrettable that the Presidency is not here. I noted the explanations about the DG of Public Works. I think the written explanation suffices. I think the matter will be in court on 7, 8, 9 of July. That is fine but at the same time we are dealing with a perennial corruption headache of PPE and maladministration and corrupting and the SIU has been tasked to investigate these matters.
“And we need to see that there is progress in the implementation of those reports in my view it’s unfortunate and a missed opportunity on the part of the Presidency to have subjected itself to parliamentary process for oversight.”
One of the reports that the Presidency was meant to discuss was the Digital Vibes tender scandal in which Health Minister Zweli Mkhize and two close associates have been implicated.
However, the Presidency has asked for more information on the Digital Vibes contract.
