Gauteng police shot and killed one prisoner and arrested four others who attempted to escape from the high court in Johannesburg on Monday.
The five suspects were scheduled to appear in court when they fled the premises.
One of the suspects is still at large.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mathapelo Peters says one suspect was shot and two other seriously injured after police opened fire while giving chase.
“The circumstances surrounding the escape are still sketchy as police are on the scene with other role players, piecing together information.
“Details of the fifth suspect, who is at large, will be circulated pending confirmation. At this stage, preliminary information suggests that the suspects were armed with knives as two police members were stabbed.”
