Probe into Carltonville woman found alive in mortuary

The Gauteng Department of Health says it is probing an incident where a Carletonville woman was declared dead at the scene of an accident, only to be found alive in a mortuary.

The department's Paul Morule, says the case has been reported to the regulatory body. 

"The case is currently being investigated and consequence management will be implemented.”

The unnamed woman was reportedly certified dead by paramedics at the scene of the pile-up outside of Carletonville, southwest of Johannesburg, in the early hours of last Saturday. 

But mortuary technicians then found the woman alive and well in a morgue fridge several hours after the crash.

Morule says only trained personals are allowed to declare a person deceased.

"It should be noted that paramedics or any appropriately trained and designated person can certify death at the scene as per Birth and Death Registration Act 51 of 1992. The role of forensic officers is to collect once bodies have been certified dead," Morule adds

Morule says they have been in contact with the patient’s family to provide the necessary support.
