Probe into possible foul play following blaze at Durban mosque

Police in KwaZulu-Natal have opened a criminal case after a fire broke out at a mosque in the south of Durban.
A storage room at a Chatsworth mosque caught alight on Wednesday morning.
Police say they are investigating the circumstances which led to the fire at the Masjid-e-Mukhtar mosque.
According to police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbhele, the fire was extinguished by worshippers following their morning prayers.

The storage room was filled with cleaning detergent and chemicals.
“A case of malicious damage to property will be investigated by Chatsworth SAPS.”
As a precaution, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Explosives Unit was called in to sweep the area.

“There were no injuries. Everything that was in that storage was burnt. We cannot rule out foul play as the police are still on the scene,” says Mbhele.
