Protest erupts at Charlotte Maxeke hospital
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
Chaos erupted at the Charlotte
Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg on Thursday when protesting workers barricaded
entrances and threw garbage on the floors.
Workers are accusing the Gauteng Department of Health of failing to pay performance bonuses.
Members of National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) are also unhappy over the state of wage negotiations.
Nehawu's Gracia Rikhotso says the protest started on Monday after the department failed to show up for a scheduled meeting.
"This came as a result of a commitment the department had made where we agreed to use the 2017/18 budget for the performance bonuses to pay the 2016/17 performance bonus."
Rikhotso says the department wants to meet with the union on Friday but members are not in favour of it.
She they will first meet with Nehawu members to decide on the way forward.
Police say there have so far not been any injuries or arrests but they are advising patients to use the hospital's southern gate as the other entrances are blocked by protesters.
Shibase says situation is quite serious, as protesters are throwing garbage on the floors.
"Protesters are chanting and singing inside the hospital. The northern gate is closed as a fire was started by protesters."
