Protest in Soweto over electricity cuts

Residents say they have been without electricity for several months now.

Residents of Mndeni in Soweto have taken to the streets over a lack of electricity in the area. 


Residents say they have been without electricity for several months now. 


They barricaded the entrance to Zola Clinic with rocks and burning tyres on Wednesday morning.


Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla has advised motorists to avoid the area.


"There is a protest action in Mndeni south, Soweto with closures at Zamakulungisa Obed street at the Zola Clinic entrance and Matshaya street the community are protesting for being without electricity for two months now officers are on scene monitoring the situation which is calm at the moment and motorists are advised to avoid and they can use Vilakazi street and Nyakale street as alternative routes." 


Residents have been calling on power utility Eskom to upgrade the electricity network in the area.


Recently Eskom has been consistently implementing load reduction in Soweto and other areas.
