Zandspruit on the West Rand was a no-go area on Wednesday morning after residents took to the streets in a service delivery protest.
Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to push protesters off the streets after they barricaded Beyers Naudé Drive at Peter Road.
Residents started protest action on Tuesday.
"They were protesting over service delivery and electricity. As the police, we are monitoring the situation," said police spokesperson Kay Makhubela.

One protester has been arrested for public violence and malicious damage to property after a garage shop was looted.
"There is a garage which is next to the Zandspruit Shopping Centre which was vandalised and damaged," Makhubela said.
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department's spokesperson, Edna Mamonyane, said they were diverting traffic after cars were stoned yesterday.
"We managed to make sure we cordoned off, we make sure that motorists don't go closer to the area where the residents are gathered," Mamonyane said.
