Protesting Randfontein residents block roads with burning tyres, rocks
Residents of Toekomsrus in Randfontein blockaded roads with burning Tyres and rocks in a service delivery protest on Thursday.
Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Obed Sibasa said the area was a no-go zone for motorists during much of the morning.
"Gauteng Traffic Police warn motorists and other road users of protest action in Toekomsrus, in Randfontein. Residents have blockaded roads with rocks and burning Tyres, unsafe to access or exit Toekomsrus."
The protest led to heavy delays along the R559 highway.
"Affected routes include the R559, Goud Street entrance to Toekomsrus. Diamond and Park Street are not accessible at all. We advise motorists to avoid to avoid the area," said Sibasa.
There have also been reports of residents stoning cars.
