Protests have the potential to destroy universities: Zuma
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
President Jacob Zuma expressed his concern over the students' protests at several universities in his address at the Higher Education Imbizo at Emperor's Palace on Monday morning.
Various stakeholders, including parents, business labour and students, are attending the multi-stakeholder forum consultative meeting to chart the way forward following weeks of protests at institutions of higher learning.
"We meet here today at a critical juncture for our country's higher education system," Zuma said.
Several universities suspended academic activities, saying the safety of students, staff and property is priority.
Zuma voiced his concern over academic programmes coming to a halt and the negative influence that will have on students' futures.
"What is happening on our campuses at present has the potential to destroy our universities. We need to ensure that the sustainability and development of our university system is intact," he said.
Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande earlier said a small group of students want collapse the system.
"What started as legitimate and peaceful protests now seem to have been hijacked by elements who seem to want to collapse the system," Nzimande said.
