PSA threatens strike after ConCourt strikes down wage agreement
The Public Servants Association (PSA) has threatened to embark on a strike across the public sector if government does not accede to its demands for a wage hike.
The union said it was disappointed at the Constitution Court judgment which declared the public sector wage agreement invalid and unenforceable.
PSA, Nehawu and others approached the apex court to appeal a Labour court ruling which stated that government does not have an obligation pay government workers their increase from an agreement dating back to 2018.
Government was able to comply with the agreement for two years but failed in the third year.
The agreement was going to cost the fiscus R75 billion in back payments.
"This tells us that government cannot be trusted, how can they implement an agreement that is invalid over a period of two years without any consequence management on them," said the PSA's Ruben Maleka.
"As the PSA we are ready to reinstate our demands and following that, which we did already, we expect government would do the right thing and give a mandate to whatever resolution that will be sign, failing which there will be a total shutdown of the entire public service every soon.”
