On Wednesday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the precautionary suspension of Mamphiswana.

He is accused of orchestrating the appointment of his mistress at the department.

The PSA’s Reuben Maleka says the decision is long overdue.

“It has been our call, noting that the Public Service Commission is responsible to ensure there is no corruption or maladministration in the public service so you’d imagine that the person that heads that institution needs to be the person that has a good integrity, a person that can be exemplary to the public service.

“Given the nature of the allegations levelled against the DG, we believe that the president did the right thing and the suspension was the right decision to be made at this time.”

This comes after the president was handed a 37-page report detailing alleged improper conduct by Mamphiswana during the filling of a vacancy within the department. The report, released earlier this year, recommended that the president institute formal disciplinary action against Mamphiswana.

Last month, a 37-page report detailing alleged improper conduct by Mamphiswana during the filling of a vacancy within the department was handed to Ramaphosa.

The report recommended that the president institute formal disciplinary action against Mamphiswana.

“Those are very serious allegations that cannot be left to be investigated while its business as usual therefore the call for suspension befits the occasion. He will have to clear his name while the organisation is headed up by someone else,” Maleka adds.

He says further action must be taken soon.

“We call upon the process to be expedited to ensure that justice prevails in a shorter period of time.”
