Public input on BELA Bill continues
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Members of the public still have an opportunity to give input on government's controversial Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill.
The BELA Bill proposes several changes to the South African Schools Act, including the transfer of control to the education department in determining a school's language policies and curriculums.
Chairperson of the Education Portfolio Committee, Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba says public hearings will be conducted during the week and the weekends to afford all stakeholders enough time to participate.
Consultations have thus far been conducted in Limpopo, Free State, North West, and in Mpumalanga.
However, the Great Sibanda region in Mpumalanga is still outstanding.

Consultations will continue in Gauteng and the Great Sibanda
On Saturday afternoon, hearings on the Bill are being held in Johannesburg, and on Sunday, in Brakpan.
The hearing in Tshwane on Friday was well attended with Parliament saying there was a strong rejection of clause 37 of the bill which proposes a framework for parents and learners that choose home education as a method of education.
