Public transport grounded across the capital

The City of Tshwane has confirmed that public transport, including bus services, will not be operational on the city's streets on Wednesday.

Tshwane protest

Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport Sheila Lynn Senkubuge says they have been informed that taxi drivers plan to gather in the Pretoria Central Business District (DBC) from 9 am on Wednesday morning.

Chaos and violence erupted in the area on Tuesday, when taxi operators in the area confronted a group of alleged drug dealers in a bid to clean the city's streets.

A 45-year-old taxi driver was shot and killed during the mayhem.

Police are investigating the murder, but Senkubuge says they understand that taxi operators are angry over the fact that no-one has been arrested for the killing yet.

She adds that bus operations have been halted to protect the safety of commuters and bus drivers.
