Putco suspends fare hikes

Transport company Putco has announced the suspension of its fare increases pending discussions with government.

The company recently announced a special fuel-related fare increase, which was set to take effect on1 August.
The announcement led to protests by commuters in Soweto and Soshanguve.
Putco spokesperson Matlakala Motloung says a decision was made to temporarily suspend the looming fare hikes due to pressure from commuters.
“Commuter representatives submitted a memorandum expressing their unhappiness about the impending fare increases and consultations were held with stakeholders.

“After careful consideration, a decision was taken to suspend the fuel related increase pending an intervention from the government. Putco decided to reach out to the government one more time and requested an urgent meeting with the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport.”
Motloung says it will provide feedback before 15 August.
"In the meantime arrangements have been made with ticket selling outlets to refund passengers who have already bought tickets at a higher amount.”
