Questions over police handling of Carletonville crêche case

The organisation, Women and Men against Child Abuse (WMACA), says another five mothers have come forward telling how they too suspect their children were abused at the Ninne's Nerous créche on the West Rand.

WMACA hosted a community meeting at the Westfields primary school in Carletonville over the past week end.

The Ninne's Nerous créche came under fire in March, when videos went viral showing three minor children being brutally beaten by a care giver.

The facility was closed down by the Department of Social development in Gauteng and the female suspect arrested, but later released on bail.

The 40-year old teacher Nellie Senwametsi is expected to return to the Carletonville Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

WMACA spokesperson, Ngaa Murombedzi, says the Carletonville police have refused to open cases on behalf of the parents and says they accompanied the parents to the Westonaria Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual offenses unit (FCS).

Murombedzi adds that it took some time for the mothers to give their statements to the police.

"If the FCS unit has not opened a case there is no criminal case, you can't get an assessment done of your child. So, these mothers are sitting with their children who are presenting these issues.

"But the police have not opened cases so they can't go to facilities around them to get their children the necessary intervention," Murombedzi said.

Murombedzi also confirmed that they are seeking legal advice on whether to open their own charges of negligence against the principle of the créche.

"When we inquired about laying charges particularly against the principle. If not negligent, she's running an unregistered facility which allowed for this abuse to happen. Had it be registered, maybe she would have been more diligent in making sure the children are safe. So, we're just waiting for some legal advice on how to go about that."
