R400 million in contraband confiscated since January
Updated | By Pieter van der Merwe
Custom officials have made a range of busts at South Africa's ports of entry since the beginning of 2018.
In early March, customs officials from the revenue service discovered more than R4.5 million in a South African man's suitcase.
He was headed for Dubai.
The US Dollar notes were hidden under his clothes in "sweet containers, milk powder tins and soap boxes".
The man was arrested after he failed to give authorities and satisfactory explanation.
SARS says this was the sixth currency bust for the year - with a combined R27 million in currency confiscated so far.
Since the first of January, revenue service officials, along with other law enforcement officers, have confiscated illicit goods at a combined value of R400 million.
One of the single largest busts so far was of narcotics, en route from China to South Africa, with an estimated value of R30 million.
The drugs, Fentanyl/Oxycodone - said to belong in the same class of drugs as heroin and morphine - were confiscated at OR Tambo International.
