Race, poverty to top agenda at SAHRC racism conference
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is set to host its second national racism conference on Tuesday.
The last time the conference was held was back in 2002 when Thabo Mbeki was president of the country.
The commission’s Shanelle van der Berg says a number of topics related to issues of race will be discussed.
She adds race and poverty in South Africa directly intersect, manifesting different types of racism.
"We see 64% of African black people remain poor, 40% of coloured people remain poor, so it is very much intersecting in South Africa, with the black African woman being the worse in our society," says Van der Berg.
