Racism allegations rock home for the elderly in Tshwane

What was supposed to be a meeting by the Gauteng MEC of Social Development Nandi Mayathula-Khoza to discuss labour disputes, turned in to a heated meeting on racism.

Huis Davidtz

Huis Davidtz, situated in the Tshwane CBD, has been rocked by allegation of racism.

The allegations have been leveled by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Tshwane, after it said that tenants at the home were separated along racial lines.

EFF Councilor in Tshwane, Sipho Shabane, says this was brought to his attention when he realized that black people were not given sufficient attention.

“Black people here are not given attention like the white people. Then we went through all the rooms and when we went to where the black people were housed, you could smell the urine. But when you go through the other apartments, you can smell the difference.”

Huis Davidtz has denied the allegations.

“I was surprised to learn this morning about racism because that is the issue that shouldn’t have happened here. They explained to me what was happening to be called racism and it happened on the different floor. The top floor is normally the people that we get from the hospital and those are people that will stay here for about two months or so. And the bottom floors are those people who can freely get access to their meals,” says board member Kaas Werber.

He however vowed to get to the bottom of it.
