He was speaking at the national celebrations of what would have been late president Nelson Mandela's 100th birthday in the Eastern Cape.

"As we celebrate the centenary of Madiba, we are acutely aware that the free and equal nation he fought for, will not be achieved for as long as economic inequality between black and white, men and women persists in this country," Ramaphosa said.

He also spoke about the upsurge in racist incidents around the country.

"Where Madiba is, as he looks at our country and sees incidents of racism, I know for a fact that he is deeply concerned about those incidents. We are called upon to stand up and speak out when the values for which Madiba lived and for which so many have fought for are being denigrated by those who have no interest for progress in our country."

He said Mandela stood for transformation - something that will require a lot of work and commitment to achieve.
