Ramaphosa appoints head of new Investigating Directorate
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
President Ramaphosa has appointed advocate Hermione Cronje as head of the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) new Investigating Directorate.
The directorate will be located in the office of NPA head Shamila Batohi and is set to investigate cases emanating from the commission of inquiry into state capture.
President Ramaphosa announced during his State of the Nation Address in February that the new unit, which is similar to the defunct Scorpions, would be established.
The directorate will probe common law offences including fraud, forgery, uttering, theft and any offence involving dishonesty.

In a statement, Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Khusela Diko says Cronje comes with a wealth of experience, including being employed in various capacities at the NPA.
“From 1998 to 2012, she was employed in various capacities in the NPA - first as an assistant to the first National Director of Public Prosecutions, as founding member of the Asset Forfeiture Unit, and for 10 years as regional head of the Asset Forfeiture Unit in the Western Cape.
“In her last year in the NPA she was involved in the establishment of the Anti-Corruption Task Team, a multi-agency task team established to investigate, prosecute and recover the assets of persons involved in large-scale corruption.”
