Ramaphosa to convene NCCC amid concern over new Covid-19 variant
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to convene a meeting of the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) on Sunday.
The latest meeting is set to assess developments of the new B.1.1.529 Covid-19 variant, first discovered in southern Africa.
Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele says the outcomes of that meeting will be communicated.
“The outcomes of the NCCC discussions and further consultations will be communicated in the coming days.
“The NCCC is one of several structures of government – which include the President’s Coordinating Council and Cabinet – where scientific evidence and submissions by different economic and social sectors inform executive decision-making.”
Meanwhile, South Africa has been placed on the UK’s travel red list following the news of the new Covid-19 variant.
Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Botswana have also been placed on the UK’s ‘red list’
