President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared the day of local government elections a public holiday.
South Africans will take to the polls on November 1.
It’s the first time in the country’s democratic history elections will be held on a Monday.
“The President calls on all registered voters to use the opportunity of the public holiday to exercise their democratic right and civic duty by voting in this election that empowers citizens to elect new leadership and influence service delivery where they live,” says the Presidency’s spokesperson Tyrone Seale.
“The President also urges employers to make provision for employees to exercise their constitutional right to vote on 1 November.”
The fiercely contested polls have seen political parties spend days on end on the campaign trail.
The major political parties have launched their manifestos - vowing efficient service delivery where opposition has failed.
But more tragically, the build-up to elections has also seen a spate of political killings in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
