Ramaphosa: Don't shift the VBS scandal to me

President Cyril Ramaphosa has refuted reports that he had prior knowledge of what transpired at the now collapsed VBS Mutual Bank.

According to a City Press report, government knew about the VBS looting and did nothing.


The Sunday newspaper reports that bank executives allegedly told Ramaphosa about the fraud and corruption that was taking place at the bank in early 2017.


That was while Ramaphosa was deputy president and the then head of government business, in the administration of former president Jacob Zuma.


"The President rejects the report," said spokesperson in the Presidency, Khusela Diko.

"It's quite unfortunate that given the very serious misdemeanours that have happened in that particular bank that people want to shift the blame to the President," Diko hit back at the article.


A forensic report by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) lays bare the involvement of government officials and other individuals in the collapse of the Limpopo based bank.


The damming report titled "VBS Mutual Bank - The Great Bank Heist" compiled by advocate Terry Motau, details the rot in the bank which ran too deep to salvage the institution.


Close to R2 billion of municipal and taxpayers' money were looted.


"He has no knowledge, we have no record of any briefing or meetings that were held with him."

The African National Congress (ANC) has since referred all its members implicated in the report to its Integrity Commission.
