In a statement released on Thursday, the Presidency said that Ramaphosa accepted the recommendation of the Nugent commission that Moyane be axed immediately.

The commission’s chair, retired judge Robert Nugent, found that Moyane was the architect behind the collapse of governance and administration at the revenue service.

Nugent said in order to stabilise SARS,  a new commissioner be appointed with immediate effect.

In the statement Ramaphosa described Moyane as reckless and characterised his tenure as deeply concerning - while terminating his appointment with immediate effect.

The embattled Moyane earlier gave Ramaphosa an ultimatum to declare the recommendations as unlawful or face legal action.

Ramaphosa however believes Moyane’s response to the recommendations “fail entirely to deal with the substantive issues the report raises”.

Acting commissioner Mark Kingon will remain the head of the revenue service until the vacancy is filled.
