Ramaphosa heading home amid power crisis
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
President Cyril Ramaphosa has cut his trip to Egypt short amid criticism over the government’s handling of the electricity crisis.
The Presidency announced on Tuesday that Ramaphosa will meet with the board and management of the embattled power utility on Wednesday.
He is expected to be briefed on plans to mitigate and resolve the latest round of forced power cuts when he visits the operations centre at Eskom’s Megawatt Park headquarters
Ramaphosa left the country for Egypt on Monday to attend the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development Conference, which was scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
Since then there has been numerous calls for Ramaphosa to cut his trip to Egypt short to address the load shedding, which was ramped up to an unprecedented stage 6 on Monday.
The Presidency’s Khusela Diko says Ramaphosa is also expected to visit flood-hit Tembisa on the East Rand.
"The president will meet with residents, community leaders and provincial officials managing the support being given to the stricken community."
