President Cyril Ramaphosa has reprimanded Finance Minister Tito Mboweni for his criticism of the axing of Zambia’s central bank governor.
Denny Kalyalya was recently dismissed in a shock move by Zambian President Edgar Lungu.
In a strongly-worded statement on Monday morning, Ramaphosa made it clear that Mboweni's views do not reflect those of government.

“The President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa, has strongly reprimanded the Minister of Finance, Mr Tito Mboweni, following comments made by the Minister on social media regarding the removal of Zambia’s Central Bank Governor by President Edgar Lungu,” said Ramaphosa’s acting spokesperson Tyrone Seale.
“The issue is being addressed to ensure that such an incident does not occur again.”
During a question-and-answer session on Twitter on Saturday, Mboweni questioned Kalyalya’s abrupt removal.
Mboweni also vowed to make his voice heard if President Lungu failed to provide reasons for the axing of the central banker.
Kalyalya was fired on Saturday and replaced with former deputy finance minister Christopher Mphanza Mvunga.
