The Presidency said the deputy president could no longer attend the commemoration in Mamone, Limpopo, because of “pressing family commitments”.

Ramaphosa had been invited to address the commemoration service honouring the memory of the late Kgosi Mampuru II, who was publicly executed in 1883 by the Paul Kruger regime. Kgosi Mampuru II had been accused of public violence, revolt and murder of his brother King Sekhukhune.

The Premier of Limpopo Stan Mathabathe, the royal family and organisers have been informed that the deputy president will not be able to attend the commemoration.

“The event which is hosted annually will nonetheless proceed with Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Michael Masutha representing the government,” said the Presidency in a statement issued by Ronnie Mamoepa, the spokesperson for the deputy president.
