Ramaphosa wants harsher sentences for GBV offenders

President Cyril Ramaphosa has proposed for the implementation of harsher sentences against men found guilty of gender-based violence.

Ramaphosa delivered a national address following growing calls from the public to respond to the safety of women in the country.


In his address, Ramaphosa vowed to tighten laws to fight the rape and murder of women.


"The state should oppose bail and parole application for perpetrators of rape and murder against women and children, A life sentence must mean a man who prep violence against women, rape and murder, that they are in prison for life.


"We are reviewing laws on domestic violence and sexual offenses to prioritise the needs and interests of survivors."

The party intends helping the family sue the South African Post Office and Minister of Communication Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams. EFF leader Julius Malema revealed this at a press briefing in Braamfontein on Thursday. The post office employee, who worked at the Claremont branch, confessing to raping and killing Mrwetyana during his first court appearance.

He added that said crimes against women are a national crisis.


"This is the time to come together as nation to confront our problems directly."


"Over the past few days, our country has been deeply traumatised by acts of extreme violence perpetrated by men."


Student Uyinene Mrwetyana and champion boxer Leandre Jegels are among many women killed at the hands of men more recently but the numbers are even more staggering.


The World Health Organization revealed that in 2018 alone, more than 3000 women murdered.
