Rand Water has confirmed the death of one of its executives, who was shot in Zakarriya Park, south of Johannesburg, on Monday morning.
The executive was shot and killed at the Zakarriya Park community centre.
Rand Water Spokesperson Makenosi Maroo says the officials were conducting a Back-to-School campaign when they came under fire.
"As an organisation, we are shocked and devastated by the tragic passing of our treasured colleague. Rand Water's policy prohibits the organisation from releasing the employee's name without the family’s consent.
"The water utility does not have further details but is working closely with investigators as they assess and investigate the tragic incident."
Johannesburg’s chief whip of council, Sithembiso Zungu, was wounded in the same shooting.
Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says the shooting killed one more person and left three others wounded.
"It is reported that an unknown number of suspects entered the hall where there was a donation function and started shooting before fleeing the scene with an unknown white vehicle.
"Two people were declared dead on the scene while three were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds. The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage."
