On Monday, the utility company tweeted that interruptions to the water supply would take effect on Monday for routine maintenance.

Rand Water declined comment on why it had been cancelled.

The utility company is responsible for supplying water to a large part of the city.

Johannesburg Water's Nico de Jager says they're relieved.

"The shutdown has been cancelled and we have requested from Rand Water to... when they go ahead with critical infrastructure work and upgrade that they should please be so kind as to alert the city well in advance for our residents to then also be able to prepare for such an eventuality."
