Family and friends gathered at the Clovelly Golf Course in Cape Town on Monday for Ackerman’s memorial service.

The entrepreneur passed away last week at the age of 92.

Ackerman’s eldest son, Gareth Ackerman said his father was a devoted family man.

“There are few anywhere in South Africa who have not heard of Pick n Pay and most certainly have also heard of Raymond Ackerman. My father was an exceptional retailer and of course, was so much more than that - he was a devoted family man and an extraordinary husband. Importantly, he was at his best when he was a statesman, truly a unique human being,” he said.

“Kindness, caring and sincere interest in other people and global events were Dad’s defining qualities. He was never afraid to challenge government or to display leadership when his industry, city or his country needed it”.

Pick n Pay Non-executive Director says Ackerman was ahead of his time.

“He was the best retailer, innovator and most of all a champion for both consumers and all employees. Thank you for paving the way and embodying the principles of  Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) long before these doing good business principles were considered key to business,” he said.
