Raymond Zondo appointed Deputy Chief Justice

President Jacob Zuma has appointed Justice Raymond Zondo as the Deputy Chief Justice of South Africa.

Zondo replaces struggle stalwart Dikgang Moseneke, who retired in 2016.

 

Here is what you need to know about Zondo:

 

-He began his career as an articled clerk under the late Mrs Victoria Mxenge, who was a trained nurse and later began practicing law.

 

-He served on the Goldstone Commission of Inquiry, which investigated political violence and intimidation that occurred between July 1991 and the 1994 elections.

 

-He also served in the Ministerial Task Team established in 1994 to draft the Labour Relations Bill for post-apartheid South Africa.

 

-He was appointed as a Judge of the Labour Court in 1997.

 

- He was appointed as Judge of the Transvaal Provincial Division of the High Court in 1999.

 

- In 2000, he was appointed as a Judge President of the Labour Court and Labour Appeal Court and served his 10 year tenure.

 

-In 2010 he returned to what is now the North Gauteng Division of the High Court as a Judge.

 

-He was appointed as the acting Judge of the Constitutional Court from November 2011 until 31 May 2012.

 

-In 2012 Zondo was appointed as a Judge in the Constitutional Court.
