A total of 695 shacks have been destroyed and removed in an informal settlement in Lawley, south of Johannesburg.
Johannesburg Metro Police officers and the Red Ants began the operation early on Wednesday morning.
The shacks were erected at the Kokotela informal settlement.
“695 illegal structures were removed today in Kokotela Lawley extension 2. JMPD officers were present to ensure free flow of traffic and that operation was done safely,” says metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar.
Metro police say the shacks were unoccupied at the time of their removal.
