Richards Bay worst affected by heavy rains in KZN
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Disaster management teams have evacuated at least 200 residents from their homes in Richards Bay on the north coast due to a risk of localised flooding.
Disaster management and emergency services remain on high alert as heavy rain continues to fall in parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
Co-operative Governance spokesperson, Lennox Mabaso says the move is a precautionary measure because those affected live near a river in Umzingwenya.
"It's one of the hotspot areas for flooding. We are monitoring the situation and making sure that people are safe. There have been some sporadic incidents that have been reported, but they are manageable at this stage," says Mabaso.
Local government officials says a number of homes have been washed away due to ongoing rain.
Meanwhile, KZN EMS's Robert Mckenzie says paramedics have had their hands full dealing with road crashes over the past few days.
"The rainy and wet weather has kept them busy. They've responded to multiple crashes across the province. Sadly, there's been several fatalities - one of the crashes were on the N2 highway near Zinkwazi," he said.
Low temperatures, cold and wet weather will continue today, according to SAWS forecaster, Wisani Maluleke.
