SA Covid-19 death toll passes 80 000 mark

The Covid-19 death toll in South Africa has breached the 80 000 mark on Wednesday evening, after 516 more people succumbed to the virus.

The country’s death toll now stands at 80 469.


The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported that there were 13 251 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours leading to Wednesday evening.


This brings the county’s total number of laboratory-confirmed cases since March 2020 to 2 722 202.


The institute says the latest increase represents a 20% positivity rate.


KwaZulu-Natal remains the new epicentre of the third wave, with 3 627 new cases, followed by the Western Cape with 3 338 new infections.


The Eastern Cape recorded 1 783 new cases.


There has been an increase of 606 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.


This brings the total number of people currently admitted in both private and public facilities to 13746.
