SA Covid-19 death toll surpasses 86 000

South Africa’s national death toll has increased to over the 86 000 mark, with another 42 related fatalities recorded over the past 24-hour period.
The total number of fatalities now stands at 86 216.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reports that there were 1 504 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total cases to 2 884 134.
South Africa continues to see a significant downward trend in both new cases and related deaths – with these figures being the lowest since the start of the third wave.
The institute says the latest increase represents a 7.0% positivity rate.
KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number of new cases with 391, followed by the Northern Cape with 338 new infections.
“The majority of new cases today are from KwaZulu-Natal (26%), followed by Northern Cape (22%). Free State accounted for 14%; Eastern Cape accounted for 12%; Western Cape accounted for 10%; Gauteng Province accounted for 8%; North West accounted for 4%; Mpumalanga accounted for 3%; and Limpopo accounted for 1% of today’s new cases,”
There has been an increase of 112 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, with 8 474 people currently admitted in both private and private facilities.
