In May 2020, The World Health Organization (WHO) issued guidelines stating that governments should see positivity rates of 5% and below for at least 14 days before relaxing social distancing measures.

The National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) is expected to discuss new Covid-19 regulations this week.

The government indicated last week that it is looking at alternative measures to curb the spread of coronavirus and that serious consideration would be given to lifting the lockdown.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 801 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours reporting cycle.

This brings the country’s total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 685 120.

Gauteng accounts for 255 new cases.

“The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (32%), followed by Western Cape (20%). KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 15%; North West accounted for 11%; Mpumalanga accounted for 8%; Eastern Cape accounted for 6%; Free State and Limpopo each accounted for 3% respectively, and Northern Cape accounted for 1% of today’s new cases,” says the NICD in a statement.

The National Department of Health has reported another backlog of Covid-19 mortality cases.

This is due to the ongoing audit exercise by the department.

It has reported 62 deaths and of these, 6 occurred in the past 24 - 48 hours.

This brings the total fatalities to 99 609.

There has been an increase of 28 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours with 2 482 people currently admitted in both public and private health facilities.
