SA govt not part of MTN Nigeria talks
Updated | By ANA
The South African government is not participating in negotiations between mobile giant MTN and the Nigerian government, Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe indicated on Thursday.
“This issue is between MTN and the Nigerian authorities. Obviously as government we are concerned so we do hope those talks between MTN and the Nigerian authorities bear fruit,” Radebe said while briefing journalists on the outcomes of the fortnightly cabinet meeting.
“Cabinet trusts that the discussions under way between MTN and Nigerian authorities will result in the speedy resolution of the disputes so as to ensure MTN continues its business of investing in the Nigerian economy.”
Radebe said there have been no government-to-government discussions on the MTN issue, primarily because the latter remains without a cabinet.
MTN was fined US$5.2 billion by the Nigerian Communications Commission last month for failing to cut off around five million unregistered sim cards. - ANA
