SA Human Rights Commission calls for info on ‘racism’ at SuperSport
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) on Thursday called on employees and independent contractors at SuperSport to make submissions on potential racism at the channel.
This follows an incident last year where former Springbok winger Ashwin Willemse walked off set during a live broadcast, accusing fellow rugby analysts Nick Mallett and Naas Botha of treating him with disrespect.
Following the incident, SuperSport appointed Advocate Vincent Maleka to conduct an independent review into the matter.
Maleka’s report found that while there was no “naked racism”, he recommended that the incident be referred to the commission for a final resolution.
The commission’s Buang Jones says they have reviewed Maleka’s report and have also conducted their own assessment.
The name of the first witness will be revealed ahead of the start of the inquiry, which is set to kick off in March.
